Think YouTube is just for kids looking for laughs? While there are certainly numerous hilarious videos on YouTube, you can also find videos ranging from self-help topics and online resumes to businesses demonstrating their products and movie trailers.

YouTube videos cover a variety of topics and can be used for a variety of reasons including:
- Demonstrating products
- Commercials
- TV shows
- Movie promos
- Promoting a company or service
- Stupid pet tricks
- Getting your 15 minutes of fame
- Now even college applications
To see a sampling of the videos available on YouTube, click on YouTube logo to go to the ReciprocateOnline custom channel. I have also created a custom YouTube player that includes a variety of videos I chose to represent the different ways YouTube is used today.
Setting up your account
You don’t need an account to start watching videos on www.youtube.com. However, an account is a good way to save links to videos you might want to watch again. As with most social media networking sites, there is no charge for a YouTube account. Once you have an account, you create a “channel” to save your favorite videos and can also upload personal videos to your channel.
- When you set up your account, don’t use your real name unless you are setting up a YouTube account in a business’ name. YouTube is causal, so be creative when naming your channel.
- You can set Activity settings so no one can track your recent activity. You can even decide to turn on “safety mode” if you don’t want to see videos “that contain potentially objectionable material.”
- If you would like to share your video selections with others, under the “Privacy” setting, be sure to check the box: “Let others find my channel on YouTube if they have my email address”
- A word of caution: if you delete your YouTube account, there is currently no way to ever use that email address again to create another YouTube account.
